He worked on Lake Superior the next summer fishing for salmon and digging for clams. Tom awkwardly that he knows Daisy. Gatsby invites Tom and the Sloanes to stay for dinner, but they refuse. To be polite, they invite Gatsby to dine with them, and he accepts, not realizing the insincerity of the invitation. Tom is contemptuous of Gatsby’s lack of social grace and highly critical of Daisy’s habit of visiting Gatsby’s house alone. He is suspicious, but he has not yet discovered Gatsby and Daisy’s love.
How do these detail contrast with the rumors were previously heard?
Nick’s description of Gatsby’s early life reveals the sensitivity to status that spurs Gatsby on. Gatsby’s act of rechristening himself symbolizes his desire to jettison his lower-class identity and recast himself as the wealthy man he envisions.
What are you philosophical thought regarding the difference between Gatsby and Jame Gatz?

Discuss using textual examples, tom's general disdain for Gatsby. What is that all about
?
The conflict between Gatsby and Tom, new money and old money, continues to build. "Old Money" hides its cruelty, and calls it good manners.

Gatsby guest list
Gatsby's parties are symbolic of achieving the American dream. Also, the guests are identified for the purpose of allowing the reader to visualize the lifestyle and setting of the book. This period in history, just after World War I and the Great Spanish Flu Epidemic which killed between 40 and 50 million people, depicts a time when people wanted to forget about war and disease and just have lavish parties. Guests came from East Egg, the location of the old money and long established social importance. Guests came from West Egg, newer members of the social elite. The guest list for Gatsby's party supports Gatsby's efforts to support his delusion of being one of the beautiful and important people in the New York social society of his time.

Great gatsby chapter 2
Write a lengthy, descriptive paragraph in which you show case the many characteristics of the valley of Ashes. It is symbolic of something? How can it exist so close to such immense riches and opulence? Also, what is the deal with T.J. Eckleburg??? Explain.
its desolate feel and uniform grayness, this forlorn area is home to a decaying billboard that calls attention to itself. Depicted on the advertisement are the Eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, which are described as blue and gigantic their retinas are one yard high. It was in the valley of ashes that Nick first meets Tom's mistress, Myrtle Wilson.
Use the textual details to characterize Wilson. Describe his interactions w/ Tom. How does the whole situation make nick feel? How does it make you feel? Explain yourself.
Nick describes the land that lies in between the Eggs and New York as a valley of ashes which sounds really unpleasant. Nick has the distinct honor of being the only character who changes substantially from the story's beginning.
What's the symbolic significance of the dog tom gives to myrtle. Think deeply.
The relationship between a dog and a man is that of master and servant. This mirrors the relationship between Myrtle and Tom (Tom as master and Myrtle as slave)
Since Nick is our narrator the party in myrtles apartment is appreciably spotty in its narration. Choose 8 pertinent details from page 33 to the end of chapter 2 and write them in chronologiest order. Try to fill in the blanks on your own.
narrator Nick rents a house next to secretive millionaire Jay Gatsby in West Egg, Long Island. Nick visits his rich and beautiful relation Daisy Buchanan in East Egg. At one of Gatsby’s lavish parties, Nick meets his host, who he learns is in love with Daisy and has been since their fling in 1917. Nick complies with Gatsby’s request to reintroduce him to Daisy, and the old lovers rekindle their relationship, rousing husband Tom’s suspicions.
Considering the novels structure what purpose does chapter 2 serve? Explain.
The ashen quality of the community is reflected in every element including the dilapidated billboard of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, perhaps the second most memorable image in The Great Gatsby following closely behind the green light at the end of the dock.

The Great Gatsby Chapter 1
what are your questions?
1, How many times Fitzgerald uses the words hope, or dream. Why does he do that?
2, How does Nick react to Jordan?
3, Why Tom's behavior reveal about his character?
what do you find interesting?
When Nick heads over to East Egg to have dinner with Daisy, his second cousin once removed, and her husband, Tom Buchanan, an old college buddy. Daisy and Tom have a child, who spends the majority of her two year old time sleeping in the other room. Daisy talks about when her daughter was born Tom wasn't there, and she wished that her daughter would be a "beautiful little fool" too dumb to know any better.
what are your opinions about the characters?
Nick's "advantages" come from "old money."
Nick introduces Gatsby and connects him to both new money and the American Dream, and indicates that Gatsby was done in by the "foul dust" of the Roaring Twenties. Nick's clearly come from old money.
what else can you discuss?
Predictions? Judgment? Etc?
"Old money" East Egg faces "new money" West Egg across the water, symbolically showing the class rivalry the towns literally oppose each other. That "old money" Nick rents a house in "new money" West Egg shows he spans both worlds. Gatsby's gesture is symbolic of his character: he is a hopeful seeker of unattainable dreams. It's not clear at this point what the green light symbolizes, but it's clear that to Gatsby it symbolizes some dream or hope.
